Why Silicone Gaskets Fail Early - and How to Specify for Longer Life
A silicone gasket that fits perfectly on installation day can still become a recurring maintenance problem. If it no longer presses firmly against the mating surface after repeated compression, leakage and change-outs follow. The solution is not simply to buy thicker rubber: it is to specify the right construction for the joint.
Start with the failure, not the catalogue
Check where the seal has failed. Is it permanently flattened, torn, swollen, displaced or damaged by heat? Each points to a different cause. Permanent flattening raises questions about compression set - the tendency to remain deformed after a material has been compressed. Tearing suggests that handling, edge geometry or a more resilient construction may matter more.
Also inspect the mating surfaces. A suitable gasket cannot compensate for uneven clamping, a damaged groove or a gap that changes substantially as equipment heats and cools.
Match recovery to the joint
Saint-Gobain’s Norseal range includes general-purpose R10470 closed-cell silicone sponge, lower-compression-set R10480 sponge, solid silicone sheets and foam grades. These are not interchangeable. A lightly loaded enclosure may need a soft, conformable material; a more demanding assembly may need a firmer sponge, solid rubber or reinforcement. The available closing force and gap are as important as the material label.
Published compression-set figures help compare options, but only when you also read the test conditions. The Norseal brochure reports typical values, not guaranteed service life in a particular machine. Trial the selected grade in the actual joint before adopting it as a standard.
Make the next change-out the last guess
Record the grade, thickness, width, installation location, failure mode and service interval. That history helps your production and maintenance teams see whether a new material actually improves uptime.
Brown International can help New Zealand manufacturers review the joint conditions and source a suitable Norseal silicone construction. Send us the existing gasket details, photographs and operating conditions so we can narrow the options before you trial a replacement.
